There are so many Christmas songs that exist. You may be asking yourself 'When is it acceptable to start playing Christmas songs?' or wondering which classic hits you have and haven't heard. Well, the BeGlad team got together and discussed our thoughts on Christmas hits and have ranked our favourites just for you. So open up YouTube or Spotify, because you'll want to listen to these festive tunes 🎶
14 - Santa Baby by Eartha Kitt
We're aware this is an old song, 1953 to be exact, but it's one that you automatically think of when Christmas is coming🎅 There's been numerous artists record it in their own style, like Taylor Swift and Ariana Granda, but Eartha Kitt's original is the best. It's Christmas but it's slight jazzy - well worth a spot on this list. It's a bit sultry, a beautiful song!
13 - Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee
This was recorded in 1958 but, just like Santa Baby, is a song that you automatically think of when it's Christmas time🎄 It's also well known in the film Home Alone in the scene where Kevin McCallister moves mannequins and cut-outs to make the Wet Bandits think the house it full of people. It's really upbeat and gets you in the Christmas spirit, even if you listened to it in June. We listened to it in December but it got us even more in the mood for Christmas, we think it's great. The photograph below is the scene from Home Alone where this song is used.
12 - It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year by Andy Williams
Again, it's an old song. It was released in 1963 and has been used so many times, examples being by Ellen Degenres in her '12 Days of Giveaways' and by Disneyland Resorts for their Halloween celebrations. You may be thinking, 'Halloween, that's not necessarily what it's meant for' 🤔 - but it was for the Disney villains, so, they probably love it🤷♀️ It's a great song and makes you realise how special Christmas is.
11 - One More Sleep by Leona Lewis
This is one of the most recent songs on the list, and it doesn't disappoint. The X Factor winner's vocals are stunning. The song makes you remember that there's only one more sleep before Santa comes, or should we say, before you have to fill your children's stockings up and drink the milk they're left out for Santa🎅 It's definitely worth a listen to, we thought it was great.
10 - It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas by Michael Buble
We all know it's Christmas when we hear a Michael Buble song or see a new Buble album being advertised. This was originally sung in 1951, obviously not by Buble himself, but I think we can all agree that Michael's rendition is probably one of the most well-known. It's probably one of his best known songs, and he sings it perfectly - we think it's a perfect song to get ready for Christmas!❄️
9 - Underneath The Tree by Kelly Clarkson
We hadn't actually heard this until this year, which is quite surprising considering it came out in 2013. Have we been living under a rock for all of those Christmas seasons? 🌟 The vocals in this song are amazing, which are to be expected from an American Idol winner. Amazing vocals, and just a brilliant song. It's so cheery and makes you so excited for Christmas!
8 - Step Into Christmas by Elton John
We're going back to old-school Christmas songs now with Step Into Christmas, sung by the one and only Elton John. This was released in 1973, it's really upbeat and gets anyone who listens to it into the Christmas spirit no doubt! As usual, Elton doesn't disappoint with the music video - very eccentric! It's a great song to play on Christmas morning when you're opening your presents🎁
7 - Santa Claus Is Coming To Town by The Jackson 5
The original was sung by Bing Crosby in 1947, but the most well-known is by a young Michael Jackson and his brothers. They sing a Motown version, and it's great!❣️ Obviously he's young when singing this song, but his pitch isn't that much lower when he's an adult singing famous songs like 'Thriller' and 'The Way You Make Me Feel'. Either way, this Christmas song is definitely a song to remember and play for your children. We love it!
6 - All I want for Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey
This could be a very controversial decision because it's possibly one of the most loved and popular Christmas songs of all time...Who doesn't know the words to it?🎶 Yes, we admit it, Mariah's 1994 song isn't at the top of our chart, but it's one heck of an amazing song. Not only for its ability to spread Christmas cheer, but for those whistle notes she gives us. Go on Mariah! We'd be extremely surprised if you haven't heard it, but if not, you NEED to listen to it. It's amazing!
Now we're getting to the top 5. This is where decisions got ridiculously difficult. They are all possibly the most well known Christmas songs of all time so putting them in order of our favourites was so difficult, it took a long time. They all seem to be from the 70s and 80s - we love the old school Christmas songs, what can we say 🤷♀️
5 - I wish it could be Christmas Everyday by Wizzard
It's such a cheerful song and we're sure it gets played at every children's Christmas party. Have you seen the music video to this? If you haven't, you should head straight YouTube and watch it - it's great. Although admittedly the girl he picks up towards the end of the video looks slightly scared. Anyhow, it's a great Christmas song that should be played over and over again every Christmas! ⭐️
4 - Merry Xmas Everybody by Slade
This is another one that seems to be played at every children's Christmas party, admittedly it's usually one of the last...but that's probably so it's the most memorable. It's such an amazing song and gets you in the Christmas spirit❄️ Even the music video makes you just want to get up and dance. This made us all SO excited for Christmas. Merry Christmas everybody!
3 - Last Christmas by Wham
Despite the fact that this song is a little depressing compared to some others on this list, it's still a fantastic song. "Last Christmas I gave you my heart, but the very next day you have it away" doesn't sound too cheery🤔 "You tore me apart", "you'll never fool me again" - at least he sounds like he's going to have a better Christmas this year?! The late George Michael sang this song beautifully, and it's forever going to be a memorable Christmas song embedded into people's memories.
2 - Fairytale of New York by The Pogues ft Kirsty MacColl
There's lots of controversy going around about this song so hear us out. The opening chords for a starter...gorgeous! We guarantee that within the first seven seconds anyone can recognise it. There's a part of the song where Irish music comes into it, which is really random but brilliant. There's no other Christmas song that we can think of that does anything like that, and that's one of the reasons that we absolutely loved it. It's such a great song, and it's been voted the UK's best Christmas song so many times which proves our point! Fantastic song ✨
1 - Do they know it's Christmas Time by Band Aid (1984)
This song is legendary, not only for the song itself, but for what it stands for. This song was part of the Band Aid Supercharity Group that raised money for anti-famine efforts in Ethiopia. Do They Know It's Christmas Time sold over two million copies around the world and ended up raising more than $24 million USD. Big round of applause to everyone involved in writing, producing and recording this song, well done👏 We can't tell you how amazing we think this song is! If you haven't listened to it - you NEED to! The lyrics, the music video - everything just came together to make it AMAZING! Words can't describe how much we love this one ❤️
There are SO many Christmas songs that we couldn't fit them all onto our list. We want to hear from you what you're favourite Christmas songs are and what you think to the ones we've chosen!
